This disused intermittent limekiln is typical of those found across north-east Wales. It has two draughting arches and is in poor condition. A most enjoyable day can be had walking in beautiful countryside and discovering these relics.

The building is listed Grade II William Morgan recorded at the Llangollen Brewery in 1835. By 1870 owned by J S Tanqueray, who was a partner in Combe & Co. Ltd, London, until 1869 when he opened a brewery off New Oxford Street, then moved to Llangollen. The brewery was sold in 1919 and converted into a milk and cheese factory. A later attempt to re-establish the brewery was not realised. The pubs were acquired by F. W. Soames & Co. Ltd of Wrexham.

The Craig y Ddywart kilns served Rhewl Quarry with the original two being constructed after 1874 and a third added between 1898 and 1910. Today they provide useful storage for a business dealing in bagged aggregates, macadams and slurry seals.

A sunny January day provided an opportunity for a mini limekiln frenzy around Denbighshire. Before the light beat me I managed to visit fourteen different kilns. This was the last one of the day and is in good condition.

There are many old disused limekilns around North Wales but their condition is rapidly deteriorating. This Denbighshire example is suffering from the tree growing out of the pot which will eventually break it down completely.

Situated 1km south west of Ruabon, and in the middle of a caravan business, is this vertical winding engine house, built 1855-6 as one of the original structures of the Wynnstay Colliery. It is listed Grade II* as an exceptionally good example of the building type which is said to be the oldest surviving architectural monument in the North Wales Coalfield. It is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

This small draw kiln is in good condition and is listed Grade II.

Wynnstay Colliery was sunk by the New British Iron Company starting in 1856.By 1896 the ownership lay with Wynnstay Collieries Co. Ltd., Ruabon, and this company erected a 22ft Walker ventilation fan in 1902. Although the colliery closed in 1927 there are extensive remains to be found on the site including the winding enginehouse ( www.ipernity.com/doc/302581/35388203 ), and this building that housed the fan.

Terracotta panel on the wall of the Hafod brickworks that was built by Henry Dennis who traded as Dennis, Ruabon. There is another panel close by with the date of 1893 and this is probably of a similar date.
