Heading home past the Cat and Fiddle as the light was almost gone I was presented with this view of Shutlingsloe sitting in a sea of fog. The distant "island" is Mow Cop.

Moc Cop Castle from Harriseahead. The folly at Mow Cop is a landmark both from the Cheshire Plain and from Staffordshire. It lies just in Cheshire whilst the old quarry in front is in Staffordshire. This is a fascinating area, once filled with collieries, brickworks, quarries, mills and tramroads, but now mainly a quiet residential area, albeit rather windswept at times. To me this is the place where the north-west and the midlands meet.
The Congleton Railway

I spotted these whilst out walking a few days ago, but it was raining so hard that I couldn't risk getting the camera out of the bag. Today the sun was shining and so I was off up to Mow Cop Edge to get a shot. These are stone sleeper blocks from the Congleton Railway of c1807, now incorporated into a wall alongside the former route of this line. The track used was oval iron bars about 3ft long with a foot cast into the ends. The wheels on the trams were double flanged according to Farey in his General View of the Agriculture of Derbyshire vol 3 (1817). The line, which brought coal from Stonetrough Colliery in Staffordshire to a wharf on the outskirts of Congleton, had only a short life and was abandoned some time after the opening of the Macclesfield Canal in 1831

Mrs Tarboat and I recently took a stroll up the footpath that leads to the summit of Nab Head above Pott Shrigley. It was windy..........
The views from the hill are pretty good and I thought it worthwhile taking a shot across Macclesfield to the folly at Mow Cop. It looks quite close but is actually about 16 miles away.
Sunset from Croker Hill

The smoke hangs low below Bosley Cloud as sunset approaches at the end of a fine February day. Bosley reservoir glistens in the failing light. The far hill is Mow Cop.
Looking to Wales

A clear day and the view south-west from the Cheshire moors reveals (to the right of Mow Cop in the centre) the Breidden Hills at Criggion near Welshpool. Further left is the Long Mynd, and in the far right background are the hills around the Tanat Valley. (Best viewed large)
