Commerce Works

10 Jan 2025 14 14 161
These 2 bottle kilns in Longton were built in the late 19th century as part of the Commerce Works pottery. The pottery was run by the Chetham family from 1796 - 1869 and then taken over by H.J Aynsley in 1873. Final closure came in the 1990s and the site has stood derelict since. The building is listed Grade II but I doubt that will save it.

I spotted this modernist style house in Trentham Road, Longton, from the top of a bus and grabbed a shot as we passed. I would love to know a bit more about this building but searching has so far drawn a blank.

Portland Road Pottery

Portland Road Pottery in Longton certainly doesn't look like your normal Staffordshire pot bank. It looks as if it was built in the 1890s as stable with associated house and perhaps office accommodation. Nowadays it is used for wholesaleing wares from the lower end of the market.

Longton Community Church

24 Mar 2011 359
The original Independent Chapel in Caroline Street, Longton, was built in 1819 and as the Congregational Church this was replaced by a new building in 1905. There is a wealth of terracotta and art-nouveau glass in this building which appears little altered. Today it is known as Longton Community Church.

Potteries Connection Classic Bus Running Day. With Renown at the wheel the Berresford fantasy fleet Leyland Leopard PSU4 with Alexander Y type bodywork passes the pottery museum on the last run of the afternoon of service 6B to Ford Green Hall via Hanley Bus Station. What an absolutely stunning paint job - it looked great!

The latest addition to the Berresfords fantasy fleet is yet to be badged up and yet was pressed into service after an injector failure on the Swift during the Potteries Running Day. Here it heads for Hanley and Ford Green soon after picking up outside Longton St James church.

Edward Joseph Walker began making toffee at his Stoke-on-Trent sweet shop in the 1890's. The business flourished and in 1915, he and his son Edward Victor Walker established Walkers' Nonsuch as an independent family company, producing toffee from a factory near his shop. In 1947 they moved to these premises in Calverley Street, Longton which was built in 1894 for boiled sweet manufacturer, Horleston Brothers Ltd. The company is still family owned and manufactures only toffee.

Aynsley in blue

The older parts of the Aynsley factory, on Sutherland Road in Longton, appear to be empty and shut. I think they must have bought a job lot of blue paint last time the place was decorated.

Short Street

24 Aug 2008 305
Today I was able to explore a few bits of the Potteries that I had not seen before. This is a scene part way along Short Street in Longton where the boundary wall of Enson Works with its several bottle ovens stands looking rather forlorn. The whole pottery is listed Grade II but its condition is very poor.
