7048 and 7012 westbound after leaving Chaganhada. This was my last day on the Jitong Railway and the early light was just wonderful. It's just after 6am and the train will soon reach the summit from where it is downhill to Daban where the loocomotives would be changed for a diesel for the run over the Jinpeng section. It was just a few months before scenes such as this were gone for ever.

It is just before 6am as the eastbound passenger service leaves the wayside crossing station at Chaganhada on the Jitong Railway. The sun hasn't quite made an appearance and I was hoping the train would be a few minutes later, but it was not to be.

My last day on the Jitong Railway and the early light was just wonderful. It's just after 6am and westbound QJs 7048 and 7012 reach the summit soon after leaving Chaganhada. From here it was downhill to Daban where the steam locomotives would be changed for a diesel for the run over the Jinpeng section. It was just a few months before scenes such as this were gone for ever.

It pays to get up early to catch the light and this was certainly true out on the Jitong Railway on this morning. QJ 7081 heads a short freight westwards away from Chaganhada towards Daban. This was the second location at which we had photographed this train and it was still only 7am.

A pair of QJ class locomotives easily handle the load eastbound up the final bank before the summit as they head for Chaganhada and on to Lindong on the Jitong Railway.

A pair of QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives working hard on the 'S' curves just before the summit west of Chaganhada. In a short distance they will be able to coast most of the way down to Daban where the locomotives will be changed. By this time the change will be to a DF4 class diesel rather than another pair of QJs for the slog over the mountainous Jinpeng section. I found this one amongst the unprocessed images taken during my 2005 visit to the Jitong Railway to say farewell to the last place in the world with main line steam.
