The first snow of winter settles on the ground as Yugoslav built USA Tank clone 62-520 shunts at the Mittal owned Zenica steelworks. The use of steam at this location ended shortly after.

Zenica blast furnace

The blast furnace at Zenica stopped production in 1990 during the civil war in the fromer Yugoslavia and production here eventually became based around a new electric furnace completed in 2004. The Mittal group purchased the main part of the steelworks in 2005 and invested 100 million Euro in renovations and restarting iron production which took place in 2008. At the time of this photograph work was being undertaken to prepare the furnace for relighting,

Not needed

62-380 sits in depot at Zenica Steelworks along with several other locomotives of the same class. Whether they would ever work again was debatable as the works was on at a low level of production and had several diesels available as well as a couple of other steam locomotives in service.

Working the night shift at the loading bunkers - Zenica Colliery, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Zenica Colliery

The Zenica coal mine has many interesting structures including the hammerhead winding tower and a range of wooden loading bunkers.

Central Cinema

Even in Bosnia-Herzegovina the cinemas are closing. The Central Cinema, Zenica certainly looks to have shown its last film. I do like the name on a strip of film.

Light snow is falling whilst Yugoslav built USA Tank clone 62-520 shunts scrap wagons at the Mittal owned Zenica steelworks. The use of steam at this location ended shortly after.

At the bunkers, Zenica Mine

62-633 at the wooden loading bunkers of the Zenica colliery. This is one of the most amazing structures I have ever seen at a coal mine.

Steelworks night

11 Nov 2008 265
Zenica steelworks with a class 62 steam locomotive waiting at the crossing with the roadway to the Zenica colliery locomotive depot. A telephoto shot and a long exposure that worked out better than it deserved to be. Needs to be viewed large.

Stating the obvious

Seen on the door of a bank in Zenica. I would have thought that taking a gun into any business premises might be an obvious problem. Is that a potential bandit reflected in the glass?

Inside the washery

18 Nov 2008 291
Further adventures inside the washery at the Zenica coal mine. Lots of belt driven shakers and riveted tanks. It was noisy but it was well worth the effort to get in there.

Zenica Mine

Zenica is an old mine opened in 1884 and employs around 1,100 men. The shaft is 275 metres deep and the deepest seam worked is at 410 metres. Brown coal seams here are often several metres thick but the quality is low

62-372 derelict at Zenica steelworks 1

Derelict steam locomotives stand amongst the weeds at the Zenica steelworks in Bosnia-Herzegovina. One day they will be fed into the blast furnace that is soon due to restart production.
