Crompton Road Dyeworks

The last dyeworks to operate in Macclesfield was the Crompton Road Dyeworks of M. Massie & Sons Ltd. The chimney was built in 1947 and was the last proper brick factory chimney in use in Macclesfield. The works has now been demolished internally and will be redeveloped as flats. The chimney will be demolished in due course, or when they have worked out how to do it without wrecking the surrounding buildings.

This little dyeworks is actually on Oxford Road at the rear of the Regency Mill which faces Chester Road. In 1889 it was operated by Peter Horobin, Silk Dyer, who had recently been declared bankrupt. In 1924 Harry Bullock & Samuel Thornhill were partners in business as silk dyers at the Chester Road Dyeworks, Macclesfield, trading as "Bullock & Thornhill".
