Compensation

28 Feb 2012 280
Tegg's Nose & Bottoms reservoirs were constructed to provide compensation water to the River Bollin when the Ridgegate Reservoir was built for public water supply. They feed water into the river to maintain minimum levels of water. Looking further afield, the clump of trees on the skyline to the right of centre is the location of Cleulow Cross.

Macclesfield Forest

It was a bright day and ideal for a walk through Macclesfield Forest and up Shutlingsloe. The distant views were a bit hazy but Tegg's Nose Country Park is still clear enough in this view over a recently felled area with Trentabank reservoir in the centre.

Tegg's Nose from the west

One of the joys of living in Macclesfield is the view from the town of the hills on the edge of the Peak National Park. This view taken across Macclesfield from near Gawsworth Road emphasises the ridges as the land rises. In the centre is Higher Blakelow Farm with Blakelow behind, then comes Tegg's Nose Country Park with the quarry land covered in heather and bilberry. The highest land in the background is the northern part of Macclesfield Forest with the conifers planted on the catchment for the reservoirs at Trentabank and Ridgegate. Only the forest area falls within the National Park.

Late afternoon over St Paul's Church

When the clouds finally parted and we had a fine day, the late afternoon light was wonderful. Tegg's Nose Country Park stands out on the skyline behind St Paul's Church with the former Hovis Mill to the left.

Leathers Smithy

The brooding slopes of Tegg's Nose Country Park loom over the Leathers Smithy public house. In the foreground the waters of Ridgegate Reservoir form a familiar whirlpool before heading to the taps and showers of the good citizens of Macclesfield.
