One of the best steam locations remaining in the world is the Jalainur opencast mine close to the Russian border in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China. It is sometimes possible to see twenty SY class locomotives in action at one time.

As the sun begins to set, the transport for some of the track maintenance team stands parked outside their hut on the edge of the Jalainur opencast coal mine.

The opencast coal mine at Jalainur in the north west of the Mongolian Autonomous Region is a cold and often windy place in winter. On this occasion whilst cold it was also still and as the sun set a train running on the dirt tip at Nanzhan was silhouetted with a perfect steam exhaust running the length of the wagons.
