One of Britain's scarcer dragonflies is the Common Clubtail ( Gomphus vulgatissimus ). In Cheshire it is only found along the River Dee in May and June, and even then you have to search hard to find it. This freshly emerged female was basking in the sun at Aldford.

There are some lovely and secret places on the River Dee, such as this length upriver from the Iron Bridge at Aldford. A tranquil location with nobody else around - magic!

The blue bridge over the Dee at Aldford provides access to Eaton Hall, seat of the Duke of Westminster. It was designed by Telford and erected in 1824 by William Stuttle Junior.
