Power station coal

As the suns sinks low JS 6246 hauls a loaded coal train out of the Yuanbaoshan yard. The wagons will be shunted into the power station sidings on the left.

Silos

I am uncertain as to the function of these silos in the power station sidings at Yuanbaoshan, but suspect that they are for fly ash. The closed hopper wagons alongside and under also suggest that this might be the purpose.

Power station coal

JS 6246 draws forward at Xizhan yard, Yuanbaoshan, with the first half of a heavy load of coal for the nearby power station. It will then shunt back into the power station sidings Although there are a number of collieries in the area there was still a need to import coal and this load had come in via the main China Rail system.

Majiawan

24 Jan 2022 5 270
JS 6246 sets off from Majiawan with coal empties for the opencast loading point on a branch off the Yuanbaoshan Coal Railway. This steep line required the use of a banker to get the train up the hill and a further JS class locomotive was at the rear.

An overbearing power plant features in this poster which stands at a road junction in Yuanbaoshan. It is an advertisement for the China Construction Bank and says:- 'We will support the enterprises to develop and provide best service to people'.

Afternoon mixed

20 May 2012 1 261
The bridge over the end of the yard at Yuanbaoshan is a grand place to watch the action. On this winter afternoon JS 8250 departs with afternoon mixed whilst JS 8216 waits background. This service is still steam hauled much of the time even though diesels have been introduced here.

Opencast castle

The opencast mine at Yuanbaoshan is only a short distance from the power station as the crow flies, but it is a long way by rail due to a significant difference in height. A conveyor system was constructed with castellated towers at the changes of direction for the belt. For some reason this proved unsuccesful initially and the trains continued for several years. The conveyor provides an unusual background here as JS6246 starts a long and heavy coal train away from the opencast loading bunkers.

Xizhan yard

JS 6246 has just split its coal train and shunted it into the yard at Xizhan on the Yuanbaoshan Coal Railway. The locomotive will now retire to the depot for servicing whilst the diesel from the nearby power station takes the wagons to be unloaded.

Yuanbaoshan

It may look like a long distance working but this is actually the morning mixed train on the Yuanbaoshan Coal Railway as it heads for the mine at Fengshuigou. The empty coal wagons were at the rear on this occasion.

Power station coal

JS 6246 arrives at Xizhan with a long heavy train of coal for the power station at Yuanbaoshan. I don't know what is the purpose of platform that the workers are stood on. Perhaps it is for inspecting empty wagons before sending them off for loading at the mines.

Mixed train

17 Sep 2008 246
Mixed trains are relatively uncommon these days but on some of the Chinese industrial systems they can still be found. A long train hauled by JS 8250 crosses the long bridge over a frozen river near Gongye on the Yuanbaoshan coal railway as it heads for the mine at Fengshuigou. The passenger coaches are all at the rear of the train. Not the way things were done in the UK.
