It is well worth looking up whilst walking around a town or city as there are often interesting architectural details lurking high up. This row of chimney stacks is on Peter Street in Manchester and would at one time have been topped with chimneypots. The stone detailing of the building is also a nice touch.

The E-ON CHP plant at Albion Chemicals, Sandbach, Cheshire, went into operation in April 1999. It consists of a GE LM6000PD gas turbine, a waste heat recovery boiler and a 14 MWe steam turbine. Total electrical generation from the CHP Plant is about 56 MW, the balance of which is exported to the local network after Albion Chemicals' site demand has been satisfied. It is connected to the local electrical distribution network by two 33 kV feeders. The plant is capable of providing up to eight tonnes per hour of steam and was designed primarily for base load operation

The Carling coke works in Forbach, Lorraine, is in the area between the houses and the power station. Opened in 1910 it closed in 2009 and is currently being dismantled. The 1,873 MW Emile Huchet power palnt behind is operated by E.ON and comprises 3 coal fired units 115 MW (unit 4), 330 MW (unit 5) and 600 MW (unit 6) and 2 CCGT units (414 MW each for units 7 and 8).

Standing below the pit bank at the former Plas Power Colliery, the village of Southsea appears to have subsided somewhat.

This one has been hanging around in my pending box since the Bollington Flickrmeet in 2008! A look from Chancery Lane over the valley to the brick chimney at Lower Mills and then on to the derelict stone chimney of the Oak Bank Print Works.

Sandaoling power plant peeks over the rise with the Tianshan range in the background. I have been unable to find any information about this plant.

Scottish and Southern Energy plc currently operate the 2000 megawatt power station at Ferrybridge. This station first generated electricity in 1966.

If you lift your eyes from the mean streets of Manchester and scan what stands up above, then there are some gems to behold. Terracotta faience and chimneys on commercial premises at Oxford Street, Manchester.

A shot from when I was messing about with the zoom whilst up on the hill above Ramsbottom a couple of weeks ago. I just like the rooftops and chimneypots.

Terracotta chimneys on the old swimming baths in Union Street, Chester. Designed by John Douglas and completed in 1901. The building is a grade II listed structure.
