Leamington Lift Bridge

24 Sep 2023 3 181
The Leamington Lift Bridge crosses the Union Canal near its terminus at Lochrin Basin in Edinburgh. The bridge was installed around 1906 where Fountainbridge crossed the canal replacing a previous bridge built in 1869. When the canal was shortened in 1922 to make Lochrin Basin the terminus it was moved to its present site to replace a wooden drawbridge. It fell out of use by the 1960s, but as part of the Millennium Link project to restore the Union Canal, it required to be restored at least to allow boats to pass. A report published in the year 2000 had suggested fixing it permanently open, but the decision was taken to restore it to full working order.

Converted from a skating rink and opened in 1911 as the largest cinema in Edinburgh. Run jointly as a cinema and ballroom (Palais de Dance). Closed as a cinema in 1942. Later converted to a bingo/social club. Now demolished.

Portobello kilns

These two kilns are all that survives of Buchan's Pipe Street pottery works, Portobello. The pottery closed in 1972 but the kilns, dating from 1906 and 1909, have been preserved as an ancient monument. The left hand kiln partly collapsed during restoration work in 2006 and has since been restored.

The former Salvation Army Women's Hostel dating from 1911 is in Grassmarket, Edinburgh. The Art Nouveau lettering remains over the entrance but the building is now a backpackers' hostel.

A Midsummer Night's Tram

An Edinburgh tram arrives at the Haymarket interchange with Scotrail as night sets in. A visit to the city gave me a first opportunity to try out these well used trams which will hopefully see an extended route in the not too distant future.

Police Box

The Edinburgh police boxes are of a type unique to the city. They were designed by former city architect Ebenezer MacRae between 1931 and 1933. Featuring the city crest and Saltire-patterned mouldings, they were designed to complement the classical architecture of the Capital. MacRae created 85 in total, and they were made of cast iron at the Carron foundry near Falkirk. Around half of the slope-roofed structures measuring just 1.98 metres by 1.37m with a ridge height of around 2.74m are listed. No longer needed by the police, the boxes have now been sold off and some converted to commercial use. This example stands on Lawnmarket.
