A typical brickworks of the type seen in northern China with a large Hoffmann type kiln and stacks of green bricks covered against frost. A view from the train not too far from Jinzhou.

An unusual combination of coloured bricks over shops on Market Jew Street, Penzance. The combination of cream brick with brown and green glazed detailing around the windows is certainly eyecatching.

Winmarleigh Street

On a visit to Warrington I spotted these houses in Winmarleigh Street. This is a particularly effective use of polychromatic brickwork and the decorative red bricks over the bays and below the guttering add a lot to the final effect too.

The polychromatic brickwork seen here at Crewe Station may contain bricks manufactured by the London and North Western Railway Company at its Crewe works.

Night accommodation

My mother has always told me that the bombing of Hull was extensive and went on for many nights during the war. She told me tales of how their dog was always first into the shelter when the raid warning sounded and also how uncomfortable it was with everyone crowded into a small space which had a tendency to fill with a certain amount of water. However, her family survived, unlike the two nearby pubs that were both victims of incendiaries. Mum was taken back to Hull recently for a nostalgic look around and called at her old house. She was astonished to discover that the old shelter was still there, probably because it was built of brick whilst all the neighbours had Anderson shelters. For many nights up to eight people from the two adjoining houses, plus the family dog, sheltered in this tiny structure.

Brick machine

The Furness Brick & Tile Co Ltd has been established for over 145 years and remains a family owned business. The works can manufacture a vast range of standard and bespoke bricks to order. The brickmaking machine, manufactured by James Mitchell & Son of Cambuslang, is seen here hard at work producing traditional frogged bricks at a rate of several thousand per hour

Vicar's Lane, Chester

Decorative work dated 1881 on a building in Vicar's Lane in Chester. There is a lot of weathering damage to the brickwork which is probably a local product rather than from the quality terracotta manufacturers around Ruabon.

Rubble

In 1942 Liverpool had suffered heavy bombing and large amounts of material from both housing and docks had to be cleared up quickly. It was decided to take the rubble to Crosby where it was tipped along the beach as coastal protection. Subsequently more tipping has taken place to form a brick beach of well over a mile in length. This is a fascinating place to wander about with plenty of opportunity to find the products of long forgotten brickworks across north-west England and north Wales.

Valley of the brickworks

In China most villages seem to have their own brickworks to supply local demand. In this area between Daban and Chifeng in the Mongolian Autonomous Region was the valley of the brickworks with many kilns making pipes, tiles and bricks. The straw covering is essential to protect the green pipes from night time frosts.

Lough Allen Brickworks

11 Apr 2008 681
The Lough Allen Brickworks at Spencer Harbour on Lough Allen was established in the early nineteenth century and operated until the 1920s. Today all that remains are a number of derelict cottages and timber loading jetties with a single chimney. The works was supplied with coal from the nearby Arigna mines and bricks were shipped out across the lock and then the Lough Allen Canal to the Shannon. An example of the bricks produced at this works can be seen here .
