There isn't much wasted when it comes to the Chinese coal industry. Here at the Beichang washery the slurry from the separators is run into lagoons to dry out and is then dug out and loaded into small trucks or, in some cases, into a horse drawn cart. It is used to make briquettes which are often burned in small specially made stoves.

Beichang washery on the Chengzihe system of the Jixi Coal Railway was one of the last remaining coal processing complexes that had an intensive use of steam locomotives. It was cold and windswept but the atmosphere was unbeatable.

Slurry treatment tank at Triage-Lavoir de Péronnes.This coal washery was built with the help of Marshall Plan funding in 1954. It processed daily over 3,000 tonnes of coal from the mines of Péronnes, Ressaix and Trivières. In 1969 with the closure of the Saint-Albert and Sint-Margriete mines the washery became redundant and the equipment was removed. It is now a listed historic monument but plans for re-use of the building for small businesses have so far not been developed.

Vreoci washery in Serbia was an interesting steam location with two gauges and also the use of classic dc electrics on the coal trains from the opencast mines. Yugoslav built USA type 62-635 is here busy shunting the standard gauge sidings.

Chinese colliery architecture at its best at Didao, part of the Jixi collieries. The circular building contains a concentrator for dealing with coal slurry which is then often used to make briquettes. It is roofed over because of the extreme cold experienced in north-east China in winter.

Washery at the Vreoci, Serbia. Part of the state owner Kolubara group, the washery handles coal from four opencast mines. I had lots of problems here with the tripod getting stuck in the holes of the walkway decking. In the end I lost one of the feet completely. :-(
