Small Heath

04 Jun 2009 200
The Small Heath butterfly ( Coenonympha pamphilus ) is not all that common, although it can still be numerous given the right habitat of rough dryish grassland. There were several flying today on my walk in the hills above Macclesfield.

Painted Lady

04 Jun 2009 201
A rather battered Painted Lady butterfly ( Cynthia cardui ) basking on a rock in the hills above Macclesfield. Having flown from Afica or southern Europe along with thousands of others that arrrived in the UK recently, it is not surprising that it has suffered a little damage on the way.
