Having brought a transfer freight out of Shenyang to the yards at Sujiatun, QJ 3286 returned an hour later tender first through Huanhe Junction with a train back to Shenyang.

A lot of pointwork visible in this view. JS 6469 was on local shunting duties when I visited the loco depot at Huang Guo Tung on the outskirts of Shenyang. This seems to have supplied motive power for freight services originating in the area. When I passed by train in 2008 there was no evidence that the depot had ever existed.

A shot from the archives and a sunny Sunday afternoon at Huan He Junction outside Shenyang. There were so many trains going in so many different directions and all were steam hauled. Yet another QJ hauls a long freight across the level crossing as it swings towards the main line towards Shenyang.

QJ 1729 takes an eastbound load of empty coal wagons over the top of the Shenyang to Anshan line at Huanhe Junction near Sujiatun.The earlier numbered QJs generally had the smaller eight-wheeled tender as in this case.

This was billed as the "secret" depot in Shenyang and it was certainly hidden away amongst the back street of this district. It was very busy at the time of my visit with locomotives coming on and off shed all the time. The roster was roughly equal numbers of JS class 2-8-2 and QJ 2-10-2. When I passed by train in 2008 the whole area had been redeveloped and it was hard to tell that there had ever been a shed there. It is now a stabling point for inter city electric multiple units.

QJ 6487 goes about its daily work on a freight heading east at Huan He Junction on the outskirts of Shenyang. This afternoon saw a never ending procession of freights on this busy line.

QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives were normally fitted with smoke deflectors and so to see this example at the depot at Sujiatun was quite a surprise.

There were so many trains that Sunday afternoon at Huan He Junction outside Shenyang, that I became a bit blasé and started looking at different angles rather than playing safe. I don't normally shoot this tight outside but the sun in the background probably forced me into working this way as QJ 1876 heads towards the city with a freight from the direction of Anshan. I wish I could go back there with a DSLR and have the same trains to shoot.

A sunday afternoon spent at Huan He Junction on the outskirts of Shenyang was a feast of steam with a succession of heavy freights passing by.
