A three coach class 158 unit departs the rather basic station at Accrington on its way to Blackpool. I don't think that much remains of the original East Lancashire Railway structure constructed in 1848.

The original Scaitcliffe Colliery was sunk by George Hargreaves & Co in 1859 and abandoned in 1883. In 1890-91 two 540 ft deep shafts were sunk to the Lower Mountain Mine which averaged 26 inches thick. Most of the output went to Altham Coke Works. The workings were towards Accrington town centre and pillars of coal had to be left to support buildings such as the Town Hall. At closure in 1962 the pit employed 62 men underground and 14 on the surface.

There was a brickworks alongside the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Altham, operated by the Burnley Brick & Lime Company but this closed c1916. Both the Nori and Whinney Hill brickworks lie within the parish of Altham and I suspect that this is a product of the Accrington Nori works.

This radius brick is from the chimney of Sykes' bleach works in Edgeley, Stockport. The works ceased production in 1986 and the chimney was felled soon after. This example was saved from the rubble by the late Frank Wightman who was a wonderful draughtsman and spent his working career in the Accrington brickworks.
