Lady Victoria

National Coal Board ownership is declared on the gate at the entrance to Lady Victoria Colliery. This is now the National Mining Museum Scotland.

Winding engine

The Lady Victoria Colliery was regarded as a show-piece pit when it was opened in 1894 by the Lothian Coal Company. The 2400 hp winding engine was made by Grant Ritchie & Co Ltd, Kilmarnock. It is twin cylinder horizontal with 42" diam steam jacketted cylinders, 7' stroke, and Cornish drop valves. The winding drum is 20' diam and 10'6" wide and was replaced by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co in 1964. The brakes were also replaced by Barclay in 1953.

Side Lime Works

This is one of two kilns on the site of the Side Lime Works in Midlothian. In use in the mid nineteenth century they were both disused by 1893.

Fullarton Quarry

At one time there were two limekilns side by side at Fullarton Quarry in Midlothian. Nowadays just this one and a few fragments of the other can be seen.

Arniston Lime Works

Limekiln remains at the site of the nineteenth century Arniston Lime Works in Midlothian. Map evidence suggests that this kiln was in use during the 1850s.

Gladhouse Mains kilns

These two kilns both part of the Side Lime Works in Midlothian. In use in the mid nineteenth century they were both disused by 1893.

Niddrie

The Niddrie brickworks, near Edinburgh, was a large common-brick works built in 1924 to supply bricks for housebuilding by the Niddrie & Benhar Coal Co. It had three large Hoffman continuous kilns, and latterly, a modern shuttle kiln. The works closed in 1991, and was demolished. The site is now a shopping centre. Image courtesy of Alan Fleming

NCB Roslin

The brickworks at Roslin Colliery was established by the Shotts Iron Company in 1937. It continued in NCB ownership until 1969 and then under the Scottish Brick Corporation until 1977.
