Tunstall Free Library

15 Jun 2023 154
A rather special wrought iron sign is on the side of the former Victoria Jubilee Institute and public baths in Tunstall, building of which was started in 1889. The uses of the building included the Free Library and this was marked by the sign provided by local worthy and brick & tile manufacturer John Nash Peake in 1901. Sadly the building is now entirely derelict and up for sale at a knock-down price. Renovation of the Grade II listed structure would cost millions.

Small industrial units are often ephemeral and ignored by photographers which I think is a great shame. This is the Cemex asphalt plant on Harewood Street in Tunstall.

Thomas Adams & Co., are listed in an 1869 trade directory as having a brickworks at Newfield, Tunstall. After 1896 the Newfield Works appears under William Adams and Co. The company seems to have disappeared soon after 1912.

I found this brick on Pelham Street in Hanley and a friend found another in Newfields at Tunstall. A look at Peake's directory for 1889-90 gives a reference to the Tunstall Brick and Tile Co., Newfields.

Archaeology

It isn't just the Romans who left us tiled floors to discover. A recent visit to the site of a large tile factory yielded several fine floors in the former office area. I presume that these were used to demonstrate the wares to potential customers. Now they lie unloved amidst dereliction and waste whilst awaiting better economic times and the inevitable redevelopment that will see them gone for ever.
