Extracting the heat from the wort for re-use in the next mash. These heat exchangers at Robinson's Brewery in Stockport are due to be replaced by a state of the art energy saving system in the current modernisation of the brewhouse with equipment supplied by German company Krones AG.
Stanton ironworks

Stanton Ironworks was founded in 1787 and had just been closed down by Saint Gobain when I took this photo in 2007. The high quality pipes were the speciality of this works but in spite of operating very efficiently, productuion has been transferred to Germany. This plant has now been demolished.

Valley of the brickworks

In China most villages seem to have their own brickworks to supply local demand. In this area between Daban and Chifeng in the Mongolian Autonomous Region was the valley of the brickworks with many kilns making pipes, tiles and bricks. The straw covering is essential to protect the green pipes from night time frosts.
