Middlewich Technical Institute was built in 1897 incorporating a lot of terracotta decoration.

Boar's Head

The keystone over the entrance to the Boar's Head in Middlewich leaves no doubt as to the name of the establishment. This level of decorative architecture has generally died out on modern buildings and is a great loss.

Kinderton Arms

The Kinderton Arms at Middlewich sits alongside Rumps Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal. Having long failed as a pub it had a short career as a restaurant but has subsequently been derelict for some time.

Powering around the turn

19 Jun 2011 301
It was Middlewich Boat & Folk weekend and there was lots happening around the canal. Here the tanker narrowboat is powered around the tight turn between the second and top locks on the Middlewich flight. The drydock is just off to the right on the outside of the bend.

Difficult light but a little bit of glint from Deltic 55 022 as it rumbles slowly along the branch out of Middlewich with the Ribble Lune Railtour.

Centura Foods, Middlewich

Situated on the banks of the Trent and Mersey Canal is the factory of Centura Foods, now part of the Premier Foods group. I believe that Bisto gravy browning is manufactured here.

Balti Spice

The original business at this Middlewich location is clearly illustrated in the glazed terracotta work. I remember the butcher being one of those with pot cows and pigs in the window.

Deteriorating rapidly, it is a great shame that nothing is being done to preserve this wonderful facia.

Technical Institute and Free Library

Today I found another masterpiece in terracotta, the Middlewich Technical Institute and Free Library of 1897. So far I have been unable to elicit any detail of the history but it clearly incorporates some fine architectural features, although rather "over the top" in some ways. The friezes are something else.

Boars Head

The Boars Head in Middlewich is a classic Robinson's Pub with a great frontage. There is some nice terracotta decoration above all windows whilst the boar's head and associated decoration is (I think) stone. The Cyclists' Touring Club enamel sign below the right side windows is a bonus. The beer isn't bad either.

Alhambra

The best surviving features of the Alhambra Cinema in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK, are above the ground floor level. Below this the facade has been altered for a Chinese restaurant and the hotel which occupy the building. This cinema opened in 1920 and had 506 tip-up seats. Earlier re-uses included bingo hall and amusement arcade.
