Time ball

09 Jun 2023 2 147
When jewellers Prestons Ltd had new premises built in 1913 at 2 Deansgate, Bolton, the frontage was in a buff glazed terracotta and incorporated a clock tower topped with a time ball. Restored in 2008, it was one of only two still operating in England, the other one is at Greenwich. In 2011 when I took this photo, each day the ball was raised at 12.55pm and fell at precisely 1.00pm on receipt of an electronic signal from Greenwich. Prestons closed the shop in 2016 and I am unsure whether the time ball still operates.

Ironbridge B

Another image of a doomed power station. Due to close in 2015 is Ironbridge B power station which was commenced in 1963 and full 1000 MW capacity reached with the commissioning of the second 500 MW unit in February 1970. The cooling towers were deliberately constructed using concrete to which a red pigment had been added, to blend with the colour of the local soil. This added £11,000 to the construction costs.

The name of the manufacturer of the water tank, Witter & Son, is shown in the centre panel of the left face. Witter & Son of Crown Works, Bolton, were manufacturers of fire protection equipment.
