After a long absence Fleetline DDB 174C is back on the road and was running trips from the Greater Manchester Transport Museum. It is seen here waiting time at a stop on Corporation Street in Manchester. Having regularly used North Western Fleetlines when I was a lad it is almost fifty years since I last rode on one. A very happy and nostalgic day.
Don't stop the bus

I found this notice in the Macclesfield Courier newspaper for some time in April 1942. I was intrigued by the idea of not stopping the bus at intermediate points. I can only assume that they meant at places that were not bus stops, but then the driver would be unlikely to stop at unofficial places anyway.

Tilling-Stevens B10A No.249 in the North Western Road Car Company fleet. The bus is all set for a journey to Higher Poynton, but where was the photo taken? The Higher Poynton service was No.32 for many years and ran from Lower Mosley Street Bus Station in Manchester which opened in 1928. There are passengers on board so I wonder whether this was taken in some corner of the Lower Mosley Street site before setting out. The image is from a postcard in the collection of my friend Harold Banks. It also appears in a less clear form in the book "Glory Days - North Western".

A good find at a recent transport event was this lovely survivor from October 1946. The cover image appears to be a representation of the Lower Mosley Street bus station in Manchester. The route map is still there inside the back cover.

At the weekend I attended the Potteries Omnibus Preservation Society's running day based at Stoke City FCs Britannia Stadium. The sun shone all day and a good time was had riding on some fine old buses. Although it was not advertised to be carrying passengers on the day I was delighted to see North Western Road Car Bristol L5G CDB 206 roll up at the bus stop and piled aboard for a run to Trentham Gardens. This 1950 built bus is seen during a brief pause outside the Trentham shopping village before heading back to the Britannia.

Memories of bus travel in the 1960s with this recently discovered ticket that was lurking in a drawer that I was clearing out. I used to love travelling on North Western buses.

Don't attempt to take photographs of moving buses with a camera that isn't up to the job.
Tiger Cub KDB688 heads out of Charles Street depot on its way to a school contract run. The 'A' suffix to the fleet number indicated conversion to one man operation.

North Western in service. One of the 1962 Leyland Leopards with 36ft Alexander body stands outside the Plaza in Mersey Square, Stockport. It is in dual-purpose livery and could well be on the 27 service to Buxton.

A period piece from the days when buses were interesting. A 1958 AEC Reliance with Weymann C41F bodywork seen at the North Western garage in Charles Street, Stockport. It has recently appeared on the Hayfield (28) service. A Leyland Leopard lurks fuzzily in the background.

When I started school at the age of 5 I had to travel by bus four times a day (we came home for lunch in those days). The fare was 2d each way.
This is typical of the transport provided for us by the North Western Road Car Company Ltd from their Stockport, Charles Street garage. This is a Leyland Tiger Cub PSC1/1 built in 1957 with Weymann 44 seat bodywork. Of the thirty buses supplied in this batch all but this one were converted for one man operation during the 1960's. Conversion appeared to comprise fittings for a ticket machine and coin tray at the driver's side and an illuminated sign which read 'One Man Operation' below the windscreen on the nearside.
