The Tian Shan (Celestial mountains) provide the backdrop to SY 1304 at Dongbolizhan yard on the Sandaoling Coal Railway.

A perfect summer's day for a walk up a mountain. Today's walk took in slate quarries above Coniston and then on up to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston. Looking back down from close to the summit, the nearer lake is Low Water and in the distance is Levers Water. The latter was created as a reservoir for the copper mines just visible at the right margin of the view.

Sandaoling power plant peeks over the rise with the Tianshan range in the background. I have been unable to find any information about this plant.

Today I read the sad news from China that diesels had started work in the section of the Sandaoling Coal Railway between the CNR exchange yard at Liushuquan to Nanzhan. December 2009 saw this JS class locomotive with the morning empties and the Tian Shan range as backdrop.

Even though the temperature is below freezing there is heat distortion across the desert as two JS class locomotives take a train of empty coal wagons to the deep mines at Sandaoling.

At Sandaoling the empty wagons are pushed a considerable distance from the arrival yard to the mine at Erjing. JS 8053 is well on the way across the desert landscape with the Tianshan range as a backdrop. Think of the poor shunter perched on the leading wagon in sub-zero conditions.

Looking from Chaganhada station on the Ji-tong Railway to the foothills of the Great Khingan Mountains in the Mongolian Autonomous Region between Daban and Lindong. The vast spaces of this region are emphasised by the single figure in the fields in the foreground.
