No.7

06 Apr 2025 1 4
Chesterfield tram outside the Red Lion at Crich Tramway Museum. Chesterfield 7 was originally built in 1904 as an open-topped double decker by the Brush Electrical Engineering Company at Loughborough, it narrowly escaped destruction in a severe fire which gutted the Corporation tramshed in October 1916. Car 7, which was damaged in the blaze, was restored and a top canopy was added later at the start of 1919. On the closure of the tramway in 1927 it was sold as a holiday cottage and was purchased in a semi-derelict state from a site in Derbyshire by the Tramway Museum Society in 1973. Restoration was undertaken 2993-96 and since 1997 it has operated every season at Crich.

1934 English Electric built ex-Blackpool tram No.236 passes the fine gates at the entrance to the depot at the Crich Tramway Museum. This tram first ran as part of the permanent fleet at Crich in 1912. It is a great thing to ride on a fine day and this was the first such occasion during the 2024 season.

The site of the former tramsheds and power station at Glossop has for many years been a chemical works. Today it is operated by Plater Production providing specialist drying services to the chemical industry. A view from the tram

Having abandoned a rainy Southport I travelled by train to Manchester Airport before returning to the city centre by tram as I had not previously used this route. The tram traverses some sections along the public roads where it jostles with cars for space. This is the crossing of Barlow Moor Road on the outskirts of Chorlton.

A Midsummer Night's Tram

18 Jun 2015 1 522
An Edinburgh tram arrives at the Haymarket interchange with Scotrail as night sets in. A visit to the city gave me a first opportunity to try out these well used trams which will hopefully see an extended route in the not too distant future.

Tram Depot

The old tram depot on Mount Pleasant, Bilston, built in 1902, includes this terracotta panel. WDEC = Wolverhampton District Electric Tramways. The centrepiece is the logo of the British Electric Traction Company. Called 'Magnet and Wheel", the magnet consists of a length of special tramway rail bent into the form of a horseshoe magnet. Between the two poles is a tram wheel with electric sparks in the background.

Tram 1002

09 Nov 2010 2 1 313
Sparks fly on this wet day as Anshan tram 1002 cuts across a road intersection in Anshan City under the watchful eye of the policeman on his stand at the left edge of the shot. Sadly the tram system in Anshan has since been abandoned and the tracks removed.

Crich Quarry

It proved extremely difficult to get a photograph of the quarry processing plant at Crich. In trhe end I had to resort to shooting over the fencing near the Sherwood Foresters monument. The passing tram is on the line operated by the National Tramways Museum.
