Ridge Dragon

This example is probably a wyvern rather than a dragon and is lurking on a rooftop in Macclesfield. This looks to be a fairly recent example rather than one of the Victorian examples which are generally of better quality detail.

Wyverns

Burmantofts terracotta including a pair of Wyverns on the side of an access stair at the Midland Hotel, Manchester. The Wyvern was the emblem of the Midland Railway Company, original owner of the hotel which opened in 1903.

Not a dragon after all

I returned to Buxton on a sunny day to have another go at photographing this wonderful piece of terracotta ornamentation. Having looked again at the creature depicted I can see that it only has two legs and must therefore be a wyvern rather than a dragon.

Another wyvern

Whilst in Buxton I was tipped off about another terracotta beast in the town. This one is in much better condition than the previous example but looks almost identical in design. The house on which it sits is dated 1901.

Yet another dragon

I am always on the lookout for terracotta figures and beasts on buildings and was delighted when a friend mentioned that he had seen this one in Buxton. It's a bit the worse for wear, with part of a wing and lower jaw missing, and also rather green with lichen. However it's still very handsome and a fine adornment for the house. I wonder where it was made?

Corporate identities

Different eras, different owners. Signs of their times at Sheffield Station. The Midland Railway Wyvern is, in my opinion, the more attractive symbol, but the BR double-arrow was/is a most effective and memorable logo. I was interested to see that the newer logo had been placed in a position directly in front of the older one.
