Linkspan

At one time in the early twenty first century there were ferry services from Fleetwood to Larne and Douglas, but by 2010 all sailings had ended with services transferred to Heysham. The Fleetwood berth is limited to vessels up to 150 metres in length with a draught of 4.2 metres whereas Heysham can accommodate ships up to 7 metres draught. Today only an increasingly sad looking linkspan survives and the silting of the port means that a resumption of ferry services is unlikely. You can still cross the Wyre on a small ferry but that's all that is left.

Seen at its berth on the Humber at Hull, the MS Pride of Hull is a Bahamas registered passenger and cargo roll-on/roll-off cruiseferry in service with P&O North Sea Ferries on the Hull - Rotterdam route. The ship was launched on 11 April 2001 and entered service on 2 December 2001. Upon entering service she was the joint title holder of the World's Largest Cruiseferry with her sister, the Pride of Rotterdam.

The current ferry was built in 1984 and was designed and built at Oulton Broad by the late Fred Newson & the present owner David Archer. It can carry up to 3 cars at a time and can carry a maximum weight of 12 tonnes. There has been a crossing at Reedham since the early 17th Century. In 1949 the ferry was still hand-wound across the river Yare until early 1950 when it was motorised.

P&O ferry 'Pride of Hull' sits on the berth in the Humber close to the entrance lock to the King George V Dock at Hull. Sadly this ship is now crewed with cheap foreign labour after the company sacked all the existing crew of its various ferries. This ship is registered at Nassau in the Bahamas. The ferry service from Hull sails to Rotterdam every night.

Calmac's Loch Fyne in the harbour at Mallaig before making a crossing to Armadale on Skye. The purpose built ferry for this route was removed by the Scottish Government for use elsewhere and replaced with the Loch Fyne which is unsuitable for the Armadale service as it is unable to operate when tides are low and struggles to dock at Armadale when it is windy from certain directions. This has led to regular cancellation of sailings and significant problems for users.

The Staten Island ferry 'John F Kennedy' swings past the Statue of Liberty on a westward run. There may be no such thing as a free lunch but the Staten Island trip does not incur a charge

Seacombe floating pier on the Wallasey side of the Mersey. Ferries run from here daily to Birkenhead and Liverpool, a service that has run for many centuries.
Sound of Sleat

It was a lovely sunny afternoon when we crossed the Sound of Sleat from Mallaig to Armadale, This is the view looking north-west when about half way across. The next day all the crossings were cancelled due to the wind.

The cheap way to see the Statue of Liberty and the New York Skyline is to take the Staten Island ferry. It's about an hour for the return trip and best of all it's free!
Calstock viaduct

A train from Gunnislake to Plymouth is seen crossing the Calstock viaduct whilst the local ferryboat sits on the mud at low tide.
The viaduct is 120 feet (37 m) high with twelve 60 feet (18 m) wide arches, and a further small arch in the Calstock abutment. Three of the piers stand in the River Tamar, which is tidal at this point and has a minimum clearance at high tide of 110 feet (34 m). It was built between 1904 and 1907 by John Lang of Liskeard using 11,148 concrete blocks. These were cast in a temporary yard on the Devon bank opposite the village. The engineers were Richard Church and WR Galbraith. Originally there was a steam powered lift on the Calstock end of the viaduct, which lowered wagons to the quayside some 113 feet (34 m) below. The lift was abandoned in September 1934 and subsequently dismantled.

As the tanker narrowboat approaches Latchford Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal, she is rapidly being chased down by the Mersey Ferry Snowdrop with the Daisy Doardo and the container shuttle not far behind.
Royal Iris off Rock Ferry

Mersey Ferry Royal Iris has just a few passengers for this trip to see the sights along the river. Seen from the mudflats below the derelict promenade at Rock Ferry. The serried ranks of terraced houses on the far shore ar at Dingle.
