Deltic 55009 Alicydon is departing Sheffield towards the end of its tour to London and back via Cleethorpes. The locomotive ran for long distances at 100mph on the way to London, but was down to one engine for part of the return journey due to serious oil leakage.

With the main line career of the Deltics coming to an end (or so we thought) there is a lot of interest in 55-015 Tulyar as it stands at the buffers at Liverpool Lime Street Station. The run from Manchester had been 'spirited'!

Deltic 55 002 at Carlisle with the Deltic Scotsman railtour. This ran from York to Inverkeithing via Leeds, Carlisle and Newcastle and then back via the East Coast line. On departure for Newcastle the train soon ran into trouble when damp rail and fallen leaves created problems for the Deltic near Wetheral with severe slipping occurring after being checked by a preceding DMU.

Deltic hauled Ribble Lune Railtour arrives at Northwich off the branch from Sandbach. Reversal at Lostock Works proved to be a shambles due to Network Rail being totally disorganised and the train was delayed for over an hour whilst the staff on the ground made mobile phone calls to control/management.

Carlisle was not a place where you normally saw Deltics and there was plenty of interest when 55 002 arrived from Leeds at the head of the Deltic Scotsman tour. Why the crowd all had to gather right against the locomotive to take their photos is beyond me. The subsequent run to Newcastle was less than spectacular as the locomotive suffered badly with greasy rails and nearly slipped to a halt several times.

December 1981, and the last days of the Deltics in British Railways service were nigh. A spirited run from Newcastle to Liverpool had just been completed by 55-015, Tulyar. On leaving the train I grabbed this view at the buffer stops in Lime Street station. The blue V of the exhausts stands out well in the station lights.

Difficult light but a little bit of glint from Deltic 55 022 as it rumbles slowly along the branch out of Middlewich with the Ribble Lune Railtour.

During the last few weeks of Deltic services 55-022 is seen on a snowy day at York whilst the enthusiasts make their close-up shots.

At the end of 1981 the main services on which the Deltic were seeing out their days in regular use were the trains between Newcastle and Liverpool. Sundays in particular saw many enthusiasts riding their trains and photographing along the line.
After a good run over the Pennines 55-015 stands at Manchester Victoria before the final thrash over Chat Moss to Liverpool.

55 002 The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry arrives at York with a Newcastle - Liverpool service late on a winter afternoon. My old Pentax and slow Kodak film didn't really cope too well with such poor light.
