Boatlift

Looking over the Anderton Boatlift to the Tata owned Brunner Mond chemical works at Winnington. Soda Ash is no longer made here and the plant seems to be concentrating on the production of sodium bicarbonate.

Lost industrial splendour

Storage hoppers at the Wallerscote works of Brunner Mond and Co, Northwich, Cheshire. Coasters used to load soda ash here. It is now all demolished and housing is beginning to fill the site.

As the light fades a northbound London Northwestern service crosses Dutton Viaduct over the River Weaver.

Winnington Works

Wharfage on the River Weaver at Winnington where the boats once loaded with bicarbonate of soda. This photo was taken in 2008 when the chemical plant was still producing soda ash but the ships no longer called.

Bicarb wharf

The bicarbonate of soda wharf at Brunner Mond's Winnington Works. Sadly ships no longer call here.

Carden's Ferry Bridge

23 Aug 2017 4 1 435
The new bridge to be erected over the Witton Brook just before it reaches the River Weaver is seen here being lifted onto a turntable on a pair of barges, for floating up the River Weaver to the bridge site. The final positioning after swinging the bridge over the foundations was to admit water to the barges until the bridge settled in place.

A little local difficulty

01 Jun 2017 1 290
On a trip out along the River Weaver we experienced a little local difficulty when the exhaust caught fire due to a large build-up of carbon in the pipe. This type of event is particularly impressive at night when you can see the incandescent lumps of carbon erupting from the exhaust and raining down on all and sundry. In this daytime view you can see the lumps flying out amidst the flames and the steerer taking evasive action as his tee shirt is beginning to burn into holes. It was all over in a couple of minutes, leaving a carpet of oily carbon pieces to be swept from the cabin roof.

Semaphores

An example of semaphore signalling that is not on a railway. Vale Royal Locks on the River Weaver navigation.

Winnington sunset

29 Mar 2009 265
Day's end with the Winnington and Wallerscote sites of the Brunner Mond soda ash works to the left of the river and Anderton concrete factory to the right.

Meadowbank reflections

Early morning at the Meadowbank salt mine in Winsford.

Frodsham Wharf

26 Jul 2008 337
It is always worth a look over the parapet at Frodsham Bridge as there is a god chance of seeing the barge Panary lying at Frodsham Wharf loaded with grain. This is the last commercial traffic on the Weaver.
