Former Co-op shop at Ipswich. This building has been empty for some years and is due for demolition to be replaced by a new primary school. The project is currently stalled due to a 1960s mural at the rear of the building having been listed.

Terracotta on the frontage of the former No.1 Branch of the Loughborough Co-operative Society. The Co-operative movement was a big user of terracotta in the early 20th century.

Early 20th century Cooperative Society buildings are often beautifully adorned with terracotta faience. This detail is at the front of the Grade II listed old co-op building on Northmoor Road in Longsight, Manchester that was completed in 1912 for Beswick Co-operative Society.

Former Co-Operative Stores at New Bolsover. The village stores form part of the model village of New Bolsover. These were built c1891-4, possibly to the design of architects Brewill & Baily. The building is listed Grade II.

Faces of the Co-op

Two of the terracotta faces decorating the former co-operative shop on Market Street, Pall Mall, Barnsley. I have no idea whether they represent anyone in particular.

Labouring men on the front of the former Co-operative shop on St Mary Street in Cardiff. The Co-operative Wholesale Society in Cardiff was established in but this shop was completed after the former town hall on this site was demolished in 1914.

Co-op

Former co-op shop at Ravens Lane, Bignall End. I didn't recognise this for what it was at first as it has been well converted to a house, but the extensive use of terracotta and the ventilator on the ridge gave it away. The building is dated 1911.

Cleator Moor Co-op

The old Cleator Moor Co-op building has changed use but the original identity is still just legible on the gable end. This building was drawn by L S Lowry in the 1950s. www.artvalue.com/image.aspx?PHOTO_ID=1310516

Terracotta overload

The old co-op building on Northmoor Road in Longsight, Manchester is a Grade II Listed Building. It was completed in 1912 for Beswick Co-operative Society, an organisation that rivalled the Manchester & Salford Equitable Co-operative Society and opened several stores in direct competition in its territory. The building has just about everything from the terracotta manufaturer's catalogue. Buff and green faience, with a tower topped with eagles, cherus face, lizards, dates, co-op name, flying buttresses, ionic columns, open pediments, and much, much more! The building is now owned by Great Places Housing Group and there is now a community centre and small business units on the ground floor. The upper areas that once included a ballroom and meeting rooms are now apartments.

The Co-op lion

This wonderful lion sits atop the old Co-op building on the corner of Market Street and Wellington Street in Barnsley. In 1911 this building replaced an original building of 1865, as the central grocery department and is now listed Grade II. The Barnsley British Co-operative society was founded in 1862.

Past times recalled on the frontage of this Todmorden cafe. Of course, being Todmorden, it was raining.

Ventilation

27 Mar 2011 235
Broken Cross Co-op closed as a grocery shop many years ago and the building has seen several re-uses since. The ventilators are the originals from when Branch No.21 was built in 1930.

Former Co-op

Typical terracotta for a Co-operative branch on this 1928 built shop on John Street, Macclesfield. After closure by the Co-op it became Dale's Oatcake Bakery for many years. I was hoping to find a nice lettered mosaic in the entrance under that mat, but sadly it was plain.

Bollington Co-op
