Chasing the sun

On the curve before Rhyd Ddu on the Welsh Highland Railway a couple of Beyer Garratt type locomotives work hard uphill with a long train of permanent way maintenance stock. This was a day of trying to predict the patches of sunshine in between the heavy rain.

Small England class locomotives Palmerston and Prince amidst the majestic scenery of the Welsh Highland Railway on the long straight after Rydd Dhu station. These locomotives were built by George England and Co in 1864 and 1863 respectively in the first batch of four steam locomotives to operate Festiniog Railway.

Taking water

Beyer Garratt NG143 takes water at Caernarfon before heading the last train of the day back to Porthmadog. These ex South African locomotives seem to be ideal for this line and easily handle the trains.

A pair of Garratts stand in pouring rain at Rhyd Ddu on the Welsh Highland Railway. It was so wet that a photo with the notice boards in fron of the locomotive was the only option from the shelter of the station building. At least the Braithwaite tank is clearly visible!

The slate tip in the background is part of the Clogwyn y Gwin (Rhos Clogwyn) quarries that were at one time conected to the railway via an incline. The quarry was moribund by the 1920s when the rails were sent for scrap although occasional periods of activity occurred until final closure in 1934.

Garratts in charge

Snow is dusting the mountain tops around Snowdon as a pair of SAR Garratts heads towards Pont Croesor with a long PW train on the Welsh Highland line. The end of a long frustrating day where the sun eluded us most of the time whilst the driving rain did not.
