Commerce Works

10 Jan 2025 14 14 160
These 2 bottle kilns in Longton were built in the late 19th century as part of the Commerce Works pottery. The pottery was run by the Chetham family from 1796 - 1869 and then taken over by H.J Aynsley in 1873. Final closure came in the 1990s and the site has stood derelict since. The building is listed Grade II but I doubt that will save it.

Draw tunnel for two of the four very large draw kilns at the Cowdale limeworks near Buxton. The concrete buttresses were added in late 1931 due to the kiln face falling forward. The Quarry was opened by the New Buxton Lime Co c1901. The company was taken over by the Buxton Lime Firms in 1908 and eventually became part of the ICI empire which closed both quarry and works closed in 1956.

There are four very large draw kilns at the Cowdale limeworks near Buxton. By 1930 there were problems with the face of the kiln bank falling forward and massive concrete buttresses were added in late 1931. Cowdale Quarry was opened by the New Buxton Lime Co c1901. The company was taken over by the Buxton Lime Firms in 1908 and eventually became part of the ICI empire. The quarry and works closed in 1956.

Portobello kilns

These two kilns are all that survives of Buchan's Pipe Street pottery works, Portobello. The pottery closed in 1972 but the kilns, dating from 1906 and 1909, have been preserved as an ancient monument. The left hand kiln partly collapsed during restoration work in 2006 and has since been restored.

Hindlow

The Hindlow Quarry buildings and plant cut a stark contrast to the greenery all around. In the centre is the bridge carrying the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway which now runs as far as Dowlow for stone traffic. Hindlow Station once stood to the right of the bridge.

Acme Marls - Kilns

The listed kilns at the Acme Marls site in Burslem look completely out of context and steadily deteriorate without maintenance. The mess in front is due to occupation of the site by travellers.

Gate on the edge

07 Feb 2007 297
The field to which this gate once gave access has disappeared along with a considerable depth of the rock beneath it. The Hindlow Quarry is no longer worked for stone although the kilns remain in use, being fed with rock imported by rail from Tunstead.
