Didao dawn

Early morning shift change at Didao washery near Jixi. It was probably only twenty minutes since I had left the overnight train from Harbin and already I was in the midst of the industrial steam railways that formed the Jixi coal railways.

Sunrise empties

|
|
On this particular morning the number of empties to be fetched from the China Rail exchange sidings were such that only one locomotive was required. JS 8358 was making good progress up the bank as the sun rose over the desert. Once again a reward for getting up early.

The sun rises behind a train on the Eritrean Railway close to the summit just before reaching the capital city of Asmara.

1915 built small Mallet 440-008 may be leaking a lot of steam but it still performed well with this short freight approaching the summit of the line to Asmara at sunrise. Sadly this may be its swansong as the future of steam operations on this line is in doubt unless coal supplies can be secured.

Another scene from the past with 61 empty coal wagons and a van, topped and tailed by JS 2-8-2s, slogging uphill across the icy desert from the Liushuguan exchange sidings to Sandaoling.

The sun is just beginning to show as a pair of JS class locomotives undergo preparation by the crew at the Nanzhan yard of the Sandaoling Coal Railway.
Sandaoling sunrise
21 Dec 2009 |
|
In December at Sandaoling the sunrise coincides with shift change and there are rarely trains to be seen on the line running from the interchange sidings at Liushuguan. Happily this particular day saw the morning empties against a purple sky as the train was restarted after a stop to regain pressure.

What a great way to start the day. It was probably only twenty minutes since I had left the overnight train from Harbin. Morning shift change at Didao washery near Jixi.

Washery sunrise

Early morning at the Jalainur washery. Probably the coldest place I have ever been. With temperatures well below -30C my camera began to object to being used for more than a few seconds at a time.

Pexhill Dawn

One of the pleasures of living on the edge of the Peak Park is the chance of some fine sunrises over the gritstone hills. The tower on Bosley Minn is outside the park but the Wincle MInn to the right is within the boundary. This view taken from Pexhill Road on the way to Siddington.
Yet another Byley sunrise
26 Mar 2007 |
|
There was a considerable temperature inversion this morning which led to a light mist. This resulted in a fine red sunrise over Cheshire, but was not followed a wet day. In fact it was very sunny and probably the wamest day of the year so far.
The small dog does not appreciate sunrises and preferred to seek out the smell of rabbits!
Reshui sunrise

A QJ class locomotive heads a heavy westbound freight across the viaduct at Reshui on the Jitong Railway.
