Loading hoppers

Loading area for powder and dust products at the Morris & Perry Ltd., Gurney Slade limestone quarry. This independent family owned company supplies asphalt, ready mix concrete and aggregates. I think that this section is operated by the Gurney Slade Lime & Stone Company Limited (a subsidiaty of LKAB Minerals) a group engaged in the manufacture of ground limestone and fertilizer products, the recycling of limestone powders and mineral processing.

The new cement plant at Tunstead Quarry is situated in the old workings. In spite of this it is still visible in the south from a long way off. It looks great at night too. :-)

Coasters used to load soda ash here. Now the loading facilities lie mainly derelict, but the storage bunkers remain in use.

Dowlow Quarry Hoppers

Storage and rail loading hoppers at the Dowlow Quarry operated by Omya UK. The plant extracts and processes calcium carbonate to produce a range of fillers and extenders used in a variety of industrial applications. The photograph was taken from a public footpath but I was soon accosted by a health and safety type who tried to persuade me that I shouldn't be there without dayglo clothing. Apparently if you don't sign in at the gatehouse you are almost certain to be crushed to death by giant dump trucks. I think that there is more likelihood of being hit by a big truck whilst walking alongside most roads.
