A stranger on Shap

13 Jan 2021 1 162
Earl of Mount Edgcumbe snapped just before reaching the summit of Shap with a northbound special. I was in the area on other business and just happened to spot the people waiting lineside. There was just time to grab the camera and join them for a photo.

Shap Blue Quarry

11 Nov 2019 329
Graded stone and asphalt plant at the Cemex operated Shap Blue Quarry. The ‘blue’ quarried granite rock is used exclusively for hardcore purposes, and as aggregate for tarmacadam and concrete plants. This stone is found to be superior to other chippings use in road making, because it does not break easily and therefore does not require replacing so frequently.

Shap Beck 3

12 May 2019 2 388
The Shap Beck Quarry received a new plant in 1999 and since 2009 supplies around 650,000 tonnes of crushed kiln feed limestone from Shap Beck to Shap Fell processing plant nearby (Tata steel) and used in the large scale production of lime for steelmaking. The quarry also supplies around 300,000 to local and regional markets and has an on-site plant for making asphalt for road surfacing. There are 21 people employed directly and the quarry supports a further 30 jobs for drivers and contractors. The site extends to 118 hectares and is operated by the Hanson Aggregates division of the Heidelberg group.

Harberwain Plantation

Sometimes there isn't too much limekiln left when I get there. This one at the edge of the moorland east of Shap in Cumbria has lost its front and now lies at the heart of a small nature conservation area. The owner was pleased to show me around his little bit of heaven in the countryside.

Approaching Shap summit

I wasn't actually out to photograph trains on this day but just happened to spot people waiting by the lineside as I passed Shap in the car. Hastily pulling in and grabbing the camera I was just in time to climb onto the wall and snap Earl of Mount Edgcumbe coming around the bend on the way to Carlisle.

Beware

The warning may no longer be necessary as the rusty rails suggest disuse of the loading facilities at the Shap Blue Stone Quarry.
