Hanging on

15 Dec 2016 1 2 531
This crane stands in a small working alongside the Sheep Pasture Incline of the Cromford and High Peak Railway. The jib has already detached at the base and the whole structure is probably not going to stand for much longer. These quarry cranes were once very common but rot and the predations of the scrap men has brought most of them down.

Leawood pump house

05 Aug 2008 300
The 70hp beam pumping engine at Leawood was constructed by Graham & Company of the Milton Iron Works, Elsecar and completed in 1849. It pumps water from the River Derwent into the Cromford Canal. Each stroke of the pump raises approximately 800 gallons (4 tons) of water. Steaming days are operated during the summer and it is well worth a visit if you are in the Cromford area. The preservation group has a useful website.
