Tank wash

This structure at the Midhope tank firing range, north west of Sheffield, was constructed in the early 1940s to enable tanks to have the accumulated peat and mud washed off after a day on the moors. There would have been a heavy steel grille on top through which the detritus fell into the pit. The washing would have been by fire hoses. The silt would have to be dug from the pit on a regular basis. Tanks that were used on the range included Churchill, Centaur, Cromwell and Convenanter.

Tinsley cooling towers seen from Meadowhall Interchange.
I did not expect to find myself being harassed when I walked outside of the railway/tram interchange and started to photograph the towers. The next moment a member of the Transport South Yorkshire staff was telling me that photography was only allowed if I went and applied on an official form at the booking office. I asked him whether I was in a public place and when he said that it was I continued to take pictures. This caused him to summon backup by radio and, rather than get into a big argument, I left having got the shots I wanted.
Subsequent correspondence with TSY finally elicited the information that the footpath in the place is private property administered by TSY. I think they will brief their staff to be clearer about what is a public place and what is not, and in future I will have to ask permission before taking photographs in this area.
Yet more redevelopment

Sheffield City Centre is undergoing a development frenzy as the city begins to prosper once more.
Stanch

I spotted this on a derelict factory in Bailey Lane whilst rambling around Sheffield last week. A Google search revealed that I looked at just the right moment as someone had recently enquired about the carving on a local message board and the answers were to be found as under:
This is the Dog Brand trademark of J & Riley Carr Ltd the manufacturing company that occupied the building until the 1950's. The business was established by Riley Carr in 1806 in Bailey Lane but relocated to Herries Road South in 1954. Originally the company were concerned with merchanting steel and making steel and saw fenders but later manufactured saws, files and machine knives.
The phrase "a stanch (or staunch) dog" means a good, reliable hunting dog.

Even more cranes

We were heading for a pub lunch and turned a corner to find another vista with cranes. Sheffield seems to be the Dubai of the north when it comes to tower cranes.
