Each For All

Former Co-op shop at Ipswich. This building has been empty for some years and is due for demolition to be replaced by a new primary school. The project is currently stalled due to a 1960s mural at the rear of the building having been listed.

Fire Station

Whilst heading for Southwold I was delighted to find the corrugated iron fire station at Wrentham. It looks as if it was created out of a former village hall.

Regal

These days the Regal is an independent 3 auditorium cinema and theatre located in the heart of Stowmarket, Suffolk. Opened in 1936 as a 566-seat cinema for VEH Cinemas Ltd it saw many successful years, but by 1972 it was facing closure. The former Stowmarket Urban District Council stepped in to save the day and ownership was transferred to Stowmarket Town Council. Since then there have been several refurbishments, particularly after a major fire in 2009.

Built c1830, the building is now The Aldeburgh Beach Lookout, a centre for the arts and performance and a gallery. It is listed Grade II.

AD 1898

Details of the terracotta on the front of 25-27 King St, Aldeburgh. This is probably a product of the nearby Aldeburgh brickworks. The intertwined letters to the left of AD seem to be U B J L T.

Pay

Instructions for the pay and display parking in front of 25-27 King St, Aldeburgh. The 1898 terracotta on the front of No.27 has a definite arts and crafts feel.

Orwell defences

Strongpoint close to Landguard Point, Felixstowe, overlooking the entrance to the Orwell and approaches to Harwich. The batteries in this area never fired on enemy vessels during WWII, but the anti-aircraft defences were kept very busy.

Storage tanks at the AkzoNobel paints plant in Stowmarket.

Combs old school

24 Jan 2013 292
I have always loved buildings that feature polychromatic brickwork and this example from Suffolk is very much to my taste. The old school at Combs near Stowmarket matches the school house next door. The building has a datestone for 1875 above the stone framed window.

, Bar 'N Diner

Corrugated iron pub premises on Station Street West, Stowmarket. I think this is actually an outbuilding rather than the main bar. :-)

Dulux

Storage tanks at the AkzoNobel (Dulux) paint plant at Stowmarket. I really do hope that the colours inside match those outside.

Greater Anglia

10 Jul 2012 247
A grab shot whilst walking in Suffolk. 90008 heads a Greater Anglia service towards Ipswich is seeen passing Munton's Cedars Maltings outside Stowmarket. The livery of these trains is awful - dull and dismal, hardly better than all-over rail blue!

Fuel rods amongst the oilseed

Reade Brickworks, Aldeburgh

11 Jul 2012 524
The Aldeburgh brickworks had produced quality hand made bricks from 1648 until 2011 when it had become uneconomic and was closed. The site is now being redeveloped and a visit was made just before the kilns were to be demolished. There is a bank of four open-topped oil fired kilns that held between 40 and 45 thousand bricks each. Also on site is an older coal fired kiln that has been derelict for many years.

Flask crossing

Rattlesden Airfield

Control Tower at Rattlesden Airfield, Suffolk with T2 hangar in background. This airfield opened in 1942 and from 1943 to 1945 was home to the B-17 Flying Fortresses of the US 708th, 709th, 710th and 711th Bombardment Squadrons of the 447th Bomb Group (Heavy). It was a Bloodhound Missile station for the RAF in the 1960s. Today the tower forms the clubhouse for the local gliding club.
