Andamooka is an opal mining town north of Roxby Downs in outback South Australia. There are several little museums and opal showrooms to have a browse through. The Long Bus is certainly eyecatching but was closed when I visited.

Garden mine

How about having your very own mine in the garden. In Andamooka your dreams can come true ................. or maybe not. This a typical small opal mine in the outback town. The shaft is just behind the winding engine with the jacked up axle. The framework allows a bucket/drum of rock to be brought up and tipped for sorting.

Andamooka Community Hall

In Australia they build big corrugated iron structures. Andamooka Community Hall in the opal mining town way out in the outback of South Australia. The building now includes the Andamooka Yacht Club cafe and arts space.

Andamooka Power Station

The remote South Australian outback opal mining town of Andamooka is supplied with electricity by this 1650Kw diesel power station. Owned by Jeril Enterprises Pty Ltd the power station supplies a local mini grid. The first 240 volt electricity supply here was established in 1974 by John Lyons.

The Andamooka opal mines tend to have an air of the cottage industry about them. This is a typical shaft collar and winding apparatus and may be purchased for what will no doubt be a very reasonable sum.
