Flue gas desulphurisation plant at Ferrybridge 'C' power station. Operated by Scottish and Southern Energy plc this 2000 megawatt power station first generated electricity in 1966 and was closed in 2016.

Cooling

Disused cooling units at the Differdange steelworks. This ArcelorMittal owned plant produces beams, bars and heavy sections. It has a worldwide reputation for wide flange beams.

Power

Fiddlers Ferry from Daresbury Firs back in the days when it made a large contribution to the national grid. So sad to see this power station closed down and silent.

Ironbridge B

Another image of a doomed power station. Due to close in 2015 is Ironbridge B power station which was commenced in 1963 and full 1000 MW capacity reached with the commissioning of the second 500 MW unit in February 1970. The cooling towers were deliberately constructed using concrete to which a red pigment had been added, to blend with the colour of the local soil. This added £11,000 to the construction costs.

Cool

Over-successful cooling at the Enthoven lead recycling plant at South Darley. This is an interesting example of a manufacturing plant remaining long after the mine that supplied the raw materials has closed. On this site was Millclose Mine, once one of the largest lead mines in the world. Closed due to flooding in 1940 the site has continued to maintain links with lead production and is now the largest single site producer in Europe of recycled lead.

Tinsley Towers

The Tinsley cooling towers were 76 metres high and the last remaining features of the former Blackburn Meadows power station. They were demolished in August 2008 and now there is even less of interest to be seen from the M1 (seen here on a viaduct in front of the towers).

My favourite power station, this time viewed across the Mersey from Daresbury Firs.

Eggborough clouds

When I visited Hatfield Main there were several power stations visible from the spoil tips. This is Eggborough with a long cloud emanating from the cooling towers.
