Redcar furnace at work

Opening in 1979, the Redcar blast furnace was the largest in the UK and the second largest in Europe. It was capable of producing 10,000 tonnes of iron per day. It had a chequered career after this photo was taken in 2010 shortly before it was shut down. Revived in 2012 it was in blast for just three years before the final shutdown and closure of the steelworks.

Pushing coke into the coke car at the South Bank coke ovens, Middlesbrough. This was the second coke oven plant at South Bank and consisted of 88 ovens split into two batteries of 44. The plant was the first in Britain to have chambers exceeding 5 metres in height and was built by Gibbons Wilputte in 1971-2. The whole site has recently been demolished.

In the shadow of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge are a couple of corrugated iron buildings. At the time these were serving as workshops for Kings Coaches although that business has now moved out.

Designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long, this bridge was opened in 1934. It was the first large vertical lift bridge in Britain. With the decline in shipping using this stretch of the Tees the lifting apparatus was decommissioned in 1990.

Steel sections hand book, 1913.
Many steelworks issued books similar to this, full of useful information about calculating the size of beams etc. for your project. There were usually photographs of the works and processes too. :-)

I made a sad trip to Teesside to say goodbye to the blast furnace and steel plant that are due to be mothballed (closed) by Corus by the end of January.
The Redcar furnace and associated coke and chemical plant are seen here over the conglomeration comprising the encampment of the South Gare Fishermen's Huts Association.

GEC Traction 6 wheel diesel-electric No.268 of 1977 hauls slab within the mill complex at Lackenby. This locomotive was once named Kirkleatham, but I couldn't discern any evidence of this now.

Following a rigorous tendering process the Government today announced that it had accepted the lowest price and unveiled the latest development in high capacity commuter trains. A spokesman said: 'It is regretted that fares will have to rise by 15% but customers can be assured of even greater comfort and reliabilty with the new Notwork Rail service'.

No.2 controller in the control cabin on top of the gondola of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. There are two of these in this cabin although only one is needed to drive the bridge. A third example is in the motor house so that the bridge can be driven from there in case of breakdown.
The bridge still uses DC power but it is likely to be converted to AC operation soon.

The premises of King's Coaches are mainly constructed of corrugated iron. The buildings, adjacent to the transporter bridge, add immensely to the atmosphere of the area.
