An old photograph from 2003.....these men were attempting to remove a concrete block as part of the "modernisation" of a local school's sports-fields. Without any heavy lifting equipment they eventually gave up and re-buried it. HFF and a great weekend to all viewers.
A little music to go with this photo.

Burnley's Panopticon 'Singing Ringing Tree' is a unique musical sculpture which overlooks Burnley from its position high above the town on Crown Point. Constructed from pipes of galvanised steel stacked in layers, this Panopticon takes the form of a tree bending to the winds and harnesses the energy of those winds to produce a low, tuneful song. In June 2007 Singing Ringing Tree was named winner of a National Award for architectural excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

A quick snapshot taken while we were stuck in slow-moving Sunday traffic on the way home from Hardcastle Crags. Apart from a couple of reflections on the windscreen, the result was better than I had expected considering it was taken without the use of flash. Photographed with a Nikon D300s camera and AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens. Processed with Nikon Capture NX2.

Photographed near the town of Burnley in Lancashire, North-West England. After walking up to Crown Point and the "Singing Ringing Tree" (see my "Sony RX100" album) we decided to take a short-cut back to the town. My GPS showed this route (correctly) as a public footpath but gave no indication of how hazardous it was. There are lots of hidden rocks, holes in the ground covered by long grass and sudden steep drops down to the river which are not visible until you get to the edge of them. The so-called "footpath" itself is invisible beneath the grass and vegetation. This sign is located about half-way along the route.....I think it would have been much better if it was located at the start as a warning !!
Smile please.

I've been told that this is a coot (probably a youngster) although it doesn't have the distinctive "bald patch" normally seen on coots and (according to Wikipedia) they also have red eyes. Photographed on the Leeds-Liverpool canal near the town of Burnley in the North-West of England.

A mute swan photographed on the Leeds-Liverpool canal near the town of Burnley in the North-West of England.
"The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan and thus a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae. It is native to much of Europe and Asia and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa. It is also an introduced species in North America, Australasia and southern Africa. The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species. Measuring 125 to 170 cm (49 to 67 in) in length, this large swan is wholly white in plumage with an orange bill bordered with black. It is recognisable by its pronounced knob atop the bill."

The "Singing Ringing Tree" near Burnley, Lancashire, in the North-West of England. This "Panopticon" sculpture is situated about 1300 feet / 396 metres above sea level on the moors at Crown Point, a popular picnic site and viewpoint. It is made of steel tubes, like organ pipes, arranged in a spiral pattern to catch the wind from any direction and produce "strange unearthly music". It is about 15 - 20 feet high (for reference, the person in the photo is 6 feet tall) and it can be seen from many miles away. Photographed with a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2 software.
The VIDEOS (below) give a good impression of the sounds it can make.
