A male mallard on the Leeds-Liverpool canal near Reedley in North-West England. This is one of a series of test-shots with my new "vintage" lens, a Tokina 400mm (EFL 600mm) telephoto lens which was designed for film cameras and originally released in 2009. These film lenses can be bought very cheaply now (I got this one for £75) and many of them work perfectly on a modern digital camera.

Photographed on Pendle Water, a small river near the town of Brierfield in Lancashire, North-West England. The "Monet effect" background was accidental but I like the way it looks so I will be trying to reproduce it the next time I manage to find the right combination of sunshine (for a wide aperture) and out-of-focus background reflections.
See Note.

Two male mallards in flight....they were following a female but I couldn't get them all in the frame at the same time as she was too far in front.

A pair of male Mallard ducks photographed on the Leeds-Liverpool canal near Brierfield in the North-West of England. This is just a snapshot taken with the camera on the "Program AE" setting which has resulted in a high ISO and slight over exposure....the ducks were swimming away from me so I didn't have time to focus and set the correct exposure. The focus is slightly "off" for the main subjects but I liked the way the patterns of the ripples and the reflections of the sky and clouds have turned out so I decided to keep it.

No. 4468 Mallard is a London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built at Doncaster, England in 1938. It is historically significant because it is the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives (126mph / 202.6kph). The A4 class was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley to power high-speed streamlined trains. The wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamic body and high power allowed the class to reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), although in everyday service it was relatively uncommon for any steam hauled service in the UK to reach even 90 mph, much less 100. Mallard covered almost one and a half million miles before it was retired in 1963. It was restored to working order in the 1980s but has not operated since, apart from hauling some specials between York and Scarborough in July 1986 and a couple of runs between York and Harrogate/Leeds around Easter 1987. Mallard is now part of the National Collection at the United Kingdom's National Railway Museum in York. On the weekend of 5 July 2008, Mallard was taken outside for the first time in years and displayed beside the three other A4s that are resident in the UK, thus reuniting them for the first time since preservation. It departed the museum for "Locomotion", the NRM's outbase at Shildon on the 23 June 2010, where it was a static exhibit until it was hauled back to York on 19 July 2011 and put back on display in its original location in the Great Hall.
The locomotive is 70 ft (21 m) long and weighs 165 tons, including the tender. It is painted LNER garter blue with red wheels and steel rims.

A group of young Mallard ducklings photographed by the lake in Barrowford park, Pendle, UK. The mother duck flew off as soon as we approached but the ducklings were completely unconcerned. Photographed using a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with capture NX2.
