The North and South towers of York Minster (see NOTES). There is also a higher central tower (out of shot to the left) with a viewing area which is open to the public. Photographed with a Panasonic TZ10 camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2.
York Minster is a cathedral in York, England and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England and is the cathedral for the Diocese of York. The title "minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches and serves now as an honorific title.
The minster has a very wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic Quire and East end and Early English North and South transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338 and over the Lady Chapel in the East end is the Great East Window (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the North transept is the Five Sisters Window, each lancet being over 52 feet (16 m) high. The South transept contains the famous rose window, while the West Window contains a heart-shaped design colloquially known as 'The Heart of Yorkshire'.

In 1652, during the early years of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), their founder George Fox claimed to have had a vision on top of Pendle Hill.
"As we travelled, we came near a very great hill, called Pendle Hill, and I was moved of the Lord to go up to the top of it; which I did with difficulty, it was so very steep and high. When I was come to the top, I saw the sea bordering upon Lancashire. From the top of this hill the Lord let me see in what places he had a great people to be gathered. As I went down, I found a spring of water in the side of the hill, with which I refreshed myself, having eaten or drunk but little for several days before."
(George Fox: An Autobiography, Chapter 6)
Today Pendle remains strongly linked to the Quakers, giving its name to one of their centres for religious and spiritual study and contemplation in the United States.

Wild flowers of the "Mallow" family (Malva sylvestris) photographed by the side of "Pendle Water", a small river in Brierfield, Pendle district, UK. The camera used was a Panasonic TZ10, an excellent and inexpensive 12 megapixel "point-and-shoot" with a Leica lens (I have since upgraded to a Sony RX100). Processed with Nikon Capture NX2.

York Minster is a cathedral in York, England, one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England and is the cathedral for the Diocese of York. The formal title of York Minster is "The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York". The title "minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches and serves now as an honorific title. Services in the minster are sometimes regarded as on the High Church or Anglo-Catholic end of the Anglican continuum.
The minster has a wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic choir and Early English north & south transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338. Over the Lady Chapel in the East end is the Great East Window, (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. Pendle Hill, viewed from Colne.
Camera: Panasonic TZ10.
Pendle Hill is famous for its links to three events which took place in the 17th century: the Pendle witch trials (1612), Richard Towneley's barometer experiment (1661), and the visitation by George Fox (1652), which led to the foundation of the Quaker movement. A Bronze Age burial site has also been discovered at the summit of the hill.
