Xun.

The Xun is an ancient Chinese earthenware wind instrument which dates back to Neolithic times. The first one ever to be discovered was found in ruins at Xi'an (situated approx. 560 miles S.W. of Beijing), China and was estimated to be between 7000 - 8000 years old. Jia Pingwa (a Chinese author) described the music played on a Xun as "The sound of the Earth". The Xun comes in many shapes and sizes and with a variable number of finger holes......the one in this photo is approximately 3.25 inches / 80 mm high and has 8 holes (6 front and 2 back for the thumbs). It was given to me yesterday by my friend who has recently returned from a holiday in China.....so far I've only managed to play one note !! Vintage harmonicas.

Some of the harmonicas from my collection. The "Art Deco" ones (at the top and on both sides of this photo) date from the 1930s whilst the others are more recent dating from the 1960s to the present. The red Hohner (top) was made for the World Trade Fair in Chicago, 1933. Some of the oldest ones were in a very bad condition when I bought them but I've cleaned and restored them and they all now work well. Camera Sony RX100. Processed with Nikon Capture NX2.

Singing Ringing Tree.

The "Singing Ringing Tree" near Burnley, Lancashire, in the North-West of England. This "Panopticon" sculpture is situated about 1300 feet / 396 metres above sea level on the moors at Crown Point, a popular picnic site and viewpoint. It is made of steel tubes, like organ pipes, arranged in a spiral pattern to catch the wind from any direction and produce "strange unearthly music". It is about 15 - 20 feet high (for reference, the person in the photo is 6 feet tall) and it can be seen from many miles away. Photographed with a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2 software. The VIDEOS (below) give a good impression of the sounds it can make. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpAhRxqibT0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxKWcAPOHU0
