Wickerwork sheep.

28 Nov 2018 6 3 449
Wicker is a technique for making products woven from a variety of cane-like materials, a generic name for the materials used in such manufacture and a term for the items so produced. The word wicker is believed to be of Scandinavian origin: vika which means to bend in Swedish and vikker meaning willow. Wicker is traditionally made of material of plant origin such as rattan, willow, reed and bamboo but synthetic fibers are now also used. Wicker is light yet sturdy, making it suitable for items that will be moved often like porch and patio furniture. Rushwork and wickerwork are terms used in England. (Wikipedia). Photographed in the village of Trawden, North-West England. Camera: Sony RX100. Processed with Nikon Capture NX2.

The "Singing Ringing Tree" near Burnley, Lancashire, in the North-West of England. This "Panopticon" sculpture is situated about 1300 feet / 396 metres above sea level on the moors at Crown Point, a popular picnic site and viewpoint. It is made of steel tubes, like organ pipes, arranged in a spiral pattern to catch the wind from any direction and produce "strange unearthly music". It is about 15 - 20 feet high (for reference, the person in the photo is 6 feet tall) and it can be seen from many miles away. Photographed with a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2 software. The VIDEOS (below) give a good impression of the sounds it can make. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpAhRxqibT0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxKWcAPOHU0

The "Panopticon atom", situated on a hill-top above the village of Wycoller in Pendle District, Lancashire, in the North-West of England. This Panopticon is an "arts and regeneration project" of the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network. It involved the construction of a series of 21st-century landmarks or Panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive view) across East Lancashire, England, as symbols of the renaissance of the area. Four large-scale sculptures were commissioned, designed and constructed over a six year period for the districts of Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale. "The Halo" in Haslingden (Rossendale) was the last sculpture in the series to be erected in 2007". VIDEOS here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrCuBw-3Hns www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTb-kR2BFU8

"Millie" the Lancashire Mill-girl.

14 Oct 2014 12 5 1101
A metal sculpture of a young Lancashire Mill-worker entitled "Millie", situated outside the railway station in Colne, North-West England. During the 18th, 19th and early-20th Centuries the textile industry (mostly weaving) provided employment for the majority of people in this part of the country but the industry has been steadily declining for many years and is now almost extinct. Most of the larger textile companies have relocated to the developing countries of the far-East where labour is cheap, profits are high and health & safety at work is "less of an issue". Photographed with a Sony RX100 compact camera and processed with Nikon Capture NX2 software.
