Scavenge Hunt 30/50: Sinterklaascadeau Sinterklaasavond oftewel Pakjesavond (5 december) wordt veel gevierd in Nederland. Sinterklaas rijdt dan op zijn paard en geeft kinderen in het hele land en ver daarbuiten en van welke leeftijd dan ook cadeautjes, en vaak vergezeld van een gedicht over de ontvanger en vaak ook nog een surprise. Hoe hij dat allemaal doet is een raadsel, en het gebeurt in grote geheimzinnigheid. Vandaar dat Sinterklaas ook vaak bij duisternis langskomt. Zeker is wel dat hij een leger van miljoenen veelkleurige helpers heeft die dat allemaal bewerkstelligen. Op de foto allerlei zoetigheden die Sinterklaas laat produceren: peper- en kruidnoten, speculaas, chocoladeletters, marsepein, taai-taai. Ook pakpapier wat Sinterklaas in enorme hoeveelheden nodig heeft. Het spreekt vanzelf dat Sinterklaas echt bestaat. – – – Scavenge Hunt 49/50: Sinterklaas present Sinterklaasavond (St.Nicholaseve) or Pakjesavond (‘Package eve’) (5 December) is widely celebrated in the Netherlands. Sinterklaas then rides his horse and gives gifts to children (of all ages I might add), across the country and far beyond, often accompanied by a poem about the recipient and often a ‘surprise’ as well. How he does all this is a mystery, and it happens in great secrecy. That is why Sinterklaas often visits in the dark. What is certain is that he has an army of millions of multicoloured helpers who make it all happen. The photo shows all kinds of sweets that Sinterklaas has produced: peper- and kruidnoten (’pepper nuts and spicy nuts’), speculaas (spiced cookies or banquet filled with almond paste), chocolate letters, marzipan, taai-taai (‘tough-tough’). It also shows wrapping paper which Sinterklaas needs in very big quantities. Op pakjesavond geeft Sinterklaas veel cadeaus en surprises, vaak vergezeld van een gedicht. – – – On St.Nicholaseve (5 december) Sinterklaas (or Sint for short) gives lots of presents and surprises (French pronunciation). Many are accompanied with a poem about the receiver and the present. A surprise is, well, a surprise. Sinterklaas is an old man very wise He thought let’s make a very cool surprise As life is not a chocolatebox But it surely rocks A chocolateletter with a never ending result He thought it was quite difficult The effect was the letter disappeared And how much Sinterklaas ever peered It was gone into the smallest bits He just hopes that this fits…. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of Amsterdam, hence the three St.Andrews crosses, these are in the coat of arms of Amsterdam. Reeds sinds eeuwen komt Sinterklaas rond half november aan in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Met zijn stoomboot neemt hij cadeautjes naar alle kleine en grote kinderen. Hij neemt ook heel veel snoepgoed mee. Om deze logistieke operatie te vergemakkelijken heeft hij ruim 20 miljoen helpers in dienst. Op de foto wat snoepgoed in de vorm van enkele kruid- en pepernoten. De ondergrond is een blauw bord. Eerder heb ik ook een houten snijplank geprobeerd maar dat werkte niet goed. Ook heb ik geen achtergrond maar door een peper- en kruidnoot uit focus te houden heb ik wel diepte. De kleur blauw van het bord werkt complementair t.o.v. de kleur van het snoepgoed en dat doen we volgende week opnieuw. With his steamboat he takes with him presents to all small and big children. He is also taking lots and lots of sweets with him. In the Low Countries there are more than 20 million helpers to ease this enormous logistic operation. On the photo some sweets in the form of some kruidnoten and pepernoten . The underground is a blue plate. I tried to use a wooden chopping board but that didn’t work out well, it was all browns. I don’t have a background either, I created depth by keeping out of fcous some sweets. The colour blue of the plate works complementary to the orange-brown colour of the sweets. Winterfestiviteiten Sinterklaas wordt uitgebreid gevierd in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Chocoladeletters zijn een onderdeel van deze traditie: Sint en Piet geven vaak de eerste letter van de voornaam. De letters M, P en S zijn het populairst: de M voor mamma, de P voor Pappa of Piet en de S voor Sinterklaas. Denk overigens niet dat je met een W meer chocola krijgt dan met een J, alle letters van dezelfde serie zijn even zwaar. Alleen de I niet, maar daarvan zitten er twee in een doos. Sinterklaas laat bij sommige fabrikanten het hele alfabet produceren, bij anderen weer niet. Als iets in chocoladeletters is geschreven dan staat het er OPVALLEND en DUIDELIJK – – – Sinterklaas (St.Nicholas or St.Nicholaseve) is widely celebrated in The Netherlands. Letters made of chocolate are a part of this tradition, Sint en Piet give usually the first letter of the first name. Do not think you’ll get more chocolate if your name starts with a W, a J contains as much chocolate as the W, the I is an exception as there are two of them in a box.
