The Sunday Challenge: A4 De A-papierformaten hebben een belangrijke eigenschap: zowel bij halvering als bij verdubbeling in de breedte behoudt het dezelfde verhouding: √2:1, dat is ca. 1,414:1. Het papierformaat A0 heeft een oppervlakte van 1m², A1 een oppervlakte van een ½ m². Een A2 daar weer de helft van, een A3 de helft van een A2. Een vel A4 heeft dus een oppervlakte van 1/16 m² (of 0,0625 m²). En dat gaat zo door tot aan A8 of A10. En allemaal in dezelfde verhouding van √2:1. Op de foto een vel A4 met ernaast een A5, A6, A7 enzovoort. De foto zelf heeft ook dezelfde verhouding als het A-papierformaat. Wist je dat de verhouding √2:1 terugkomt in de fotografie? Namelijk in het diafragma van een camera. De reeks 1 – 1,4 – 2 – 2,8 – 4 – 5,6 – 8 – 11 – 16 enz. geeft per stop een halvering aan van de hoeveelheid licht aan die door de lens komt. De gulden snede is een ook een bekende verhouding, maar dan van ca. 1,618:1. – – – The Sunday Challenge: A4 The A4 paper formats have an important property: it maintains the same ratio when halved or doubled in width: √2:1, that is approx. 1.414:1.
