Saturday Self Challenge: Drama

Saturday Self Challenge: Drama
On the tramstop in the foreground are people waiting for a tram. They had a good time in the nearby zoo. To the left, a father has fun with his child. In the background a building with the name ‘Hollandsche Schouwburg’ (Holland Theatre). Next to the entrance doors the official announcement ‘no performance can be made’ which is a contradiction to the ‘theatre’.
The building had in 1942 and 1943 a major role in the deportation of Jews from Amsterdam during the German occupation. The current role of the building is a war memorial and what is announced on the doors is true.
Sixty thousand people were transported from here to the camps of Vught or Westerbork. From there these people were deported to the concentration camps of a.o. Auschwitz and Sobibor.
Jules Schelvis was one of the few survivors. He tells about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUMWPTrvz40 or www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldBAtHkvnEI (Dutch)
There was a train to Sobibor. It left on 1 June 1943 from Westerbork, filled with threethousand and six Jews in fifty cattle wagons. My wife Rachel and I and my housemates were on that train. Nobody of us knew what was waiting for us after an exciting trip which would take seventytwo hours…. In the period from 2 March till 20 July 1943 there were thirtyfour thousand threehundred thirteen Jews deported from our country to Sobibor. From those only eightteen survived the war…. I am going to tell you my personal story. It is still hard for me but I think it's important that you take note of it too.
Jules Schelvis wrote a book about his experiences (Binnen de poorten, Inside the gates) which was adapted into a play.

Note: I had some trouble with finding the right translation for 'voorstelling'. It means performance, show but also imagination. All these words are connecting to the theme of theatre and drama.
