The Sunday Challenge: Chocolade In 1828 werd in Nederland ontdekt hoe van de cacaoboon de huidige chocolade kan worden gemaakt. Hiervoor werd het scheikundig element Calcium Calcium Oxyde (CaCaO) gebruikt. Vandaar ook de spelling, in andere talen is deze vaak verbasterd tot bijvoorbeeld kakao of cocoa. Op de foto chocolade hagelslag, een populair broodbeleg. Een goede vertaling van hagelslag is lastig, vaak wordt het weergegeven als chocolade vermicelli, maar dat vind ik fantasieloos. In Nederland wordt cacao niet verbouwd, toch is Nederland één van de grootste exporteurs van cacao ter wereld. Dat komt doordat Nederland de grootste importeur van cacao is, op ruime afstand gevolgd door Duitsland en de VS. Met een blinde muur, straatnaambord, lantaarnpaal met fiets, een verkeersbord en al dan niet commerciële uitingen op regelkasten. The Sunday Challenge: Ikonisch De zuil van het Nationaal Monument op de Dam, het bekendste deel. Het is een monument voor de herdenking van alle oorlogsslachtoffers vanaf de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland en daar buiten. Het staat er sinds 1956, elk jaar vindt hier de officiële dodenherdenking plaats in aanwezigheid van de koning, regering en krijgsmacht. Andere burgers kunnen bij deze ceremonie ook aanwezig zijn, de Dam is dan ook vol. De herdenking wordt rechtstreeks uitgezonden op internet en TV. De vier geboeide mannen staan voor de ellende van de oorlog. De honden links en rechts van de zuil verbeelden smart en trouw, achter deze honden maar onzichtbaar op de foto staan twee figuren die het verzet symboliseren. De vrouwfiguur met het kind en de duiven symboliseren de overwinning, vrede en nieuw leven. Het monument staat aan de ene kant van de Dam, aan de andere kant staat het Koninklijk Paleis. De Dam zelf is uiteraard de plek waar de dam in de Amstel werd gelegd en Amsterdam ontstond. Monument ter nagedachtenis aan 18 verzetsstrijders die tijdens de oorlog werden gefusilleerd. Het beeld werd in 1947 ontworpen door Hildo Krop en kwam tot stand door de Communistische Partij Nederland en de krant De Waarheid. Het staat op de Nieuwe Ooster, een begraafplaats in de Watergraafsmeer in Amsterdam. Verreweg niet mijn beste foto, maar zeker wel een oefening in straatfotografie. Maar goed, wie draagt er dan ook een korte broek met een warme donsjas? Maar zoals het merk van de donsjas zegt: ‘never stop exploring’, doe ik dat met straatfotografie: nooit eerder gedaan en dat ben ik nu aan het ontdekken. Deze foto staat symbool voor wat ik dit jaar wil doen: namelijk vervolg waarmee ik bezig ben. Ik ben op een duidelijke weg (de zandweg) en ook beschut (de beuken). De weg is ook verlicht (zonlicht) en ik ga ook naar het licht toe hoewel die nog in nevelen gehuld is (het was die dag heiig). Dit alles doe ik op een gezonde, sportieve manier, zoals gesymboliseerd door de hardloper. En dan bedenk ik mij weer dat ik een gezegend mens ben dat ik dit kan doen. I am on a clear road (the sand road) which is sheltered (the beeches). The road is also lightened (by the sun) and I am moving towards the light although it is shrouded in hazyness (it was hazy that day). All this I do on a healthy, sportive manner as symbolised by the runner. And then I think about that I am a blessed human being that can do these things.
